College Knowledge Program

IMG_1287“You cannot be what you cannot see” is a sentiment the drives The Friendship Club and that is especially true of The College Knowledge Program. For the majority of our girls, they will be the first in their family to consider college after high school.  Our goal is for every girl to have a solid plan for the future upon high school graduation.

We begin visiting college campuses as early as the sixth grade and are always talking to girls about their options and plans after high school.  As the girls get older, their college trips become more intense and individualized.  Twice a year the high school girls attend 2-3 day college trips designed to introduce them to varied college and vocational opportunities available to them after high school. Each trip also includes experiences that broaden their horizon.

Navigating the scholarship and college application process is another important service we provide our senior girls. Girls receive help completing the FAFSA, scholarship applications and personal statements, procuring letters of recommendation, and college applications. Staff is also available to take girls on an individual basis to college entrance interviews and orientations and make sure they have what they need as entering freshman.  Many girls begin their college career locally at Sierra College or Yuba College, but every year 1-2 girls stretch their wings a little bid wider and enter four year universities. We have had girls go on to Notre Dame de Namur University, St. Marys College, University of Nevada at Reno, Chico State, and San Jose State among others.

Girls who graduate as seniors are eligible to apply for The Friendship Club scholarship, which is renewable for up to four years.

Each Spring The Friendship Club hosts a Graduation and Scholarship Dinner honoring our graduating seniors.  In the culminating event, girls share with over 200 people what The Friendship Club has meant to them, how it has impacted their lives and their plans for the future.
