Friendship Club Garden

Sierra_Harvest_3-22-14_0001In March 2014, we were excited to be one of the first garden installations in the Sierra Gardens project at our old location.  Sierra Gardens is a program of Sierra Harvest. Sierra Harvest’s mission is to educate, inspire, and connect Nevada County families to fresh, local, seasonal food.   We have wanted a Friendship garden for many years but we all personally lacked the knowledge to lead the charge.  We also never had the right kind of space to entertain such an endeavor. But when Sierra Harvest came along with this amazing opportunity we knew the time to make it happen was here.  Thanks to Ken and Kay Baker for making land available, and to the Soroptimist International of the Sierra Foothills and Nevada City for financial support, our dream became a reality.

Now that we are in our new location, we want to continue that dream and build an even bigger and better outdoor space and garden.  Our backyard space is huge, and will not only allow for a garden, but an orchard, an outdoor kitchen/eating area, a space to relax and meditate, and play games.  Our hope is to utilize this space regularly with our youth, but also make it available to the community.  Many thanks to Elizabeth Poston of Living Outdoors Landscapes for designing a beautiful space and to Weiss Landscaping for creating the source plan for the materials and labor so we can raise the funding and donated good to turn this dream into a reality! We believe that promoting fresh, local seasonal foods, and by getting our youth in touch with the land and understanding where our food comes from, will plant the seeds of change necessary to reverse so many of the health problems that plague our children.  We are will be able to provide more nutrition education, cooking classes, and hands-on gardening experience than ever before.  If you are interested in donating funding, material or labor to this effort, please contact Jennifer Singer at (530) 265-4311 x201 or jennifers@friendshipclub.org.
